Hi there Jake :D

I am glad to help you. As for mentalism, I've seen alot. And I can tell you by far my favorite mentalist would be Rich Ferguson. Rich Ferguson is a talented well known mentalist who has appeared on many stages for famous companies, TV Shows and much more.

Rich Ferguson has 3 DVD's to do with mentalism. The first 2 are perfect for any level, even for a beginner like you. This is how I started off my mentalism.

This is Mentalism 1 - This was my very first mentalism DVD, from the moment I bought it I was hooked in to mentalism. The tricks are all the treasures that Rich Ferguson uses himself and believe me, they are brilliant. On the DVD, Rich teaches slowly, making sure that anyone at any level can understand and perform the brilliant tricks. He explains every move, and every detail precisely, so you can get into the mind of others. In the DVD Rich Ferguson also explains the concept of combining magic and mentalism to get the best of both worlds. The DVD costs $29.95 but it was TOTALLY worth it, trust me. You can find it on Ellusionist here: http://www.ellusionist.com/this-is-mentalism-rich-ferguson.html

This is Mentalism 2- This is the sequel to This is Mentalism 1, and without hesitation, I purchased it as soon as it came out. And I was shocked! It was much better then This is Mentalism 1 which is a master piece in the first place. By better I didnt mean the DVD, or the teaching methods, I mean the actual tricks. In my opinion This is Mentalism 2 has smarter and better tricks, but can be some what more advanced. The teaching method is the same.
You can find it here: http://www.ellusionist.com/this-is-mentalism-2-rich-ferguson.html

Tagged - This is again by Rich Ferguson, but instead of about 10 tricks per DVD, tagged is a single trick. THIS IS MY FAVORITE TRICK OF ALL TIME. It has gotten me the best reactions I have ever had, and I have been performing quite a while. It is ingenious. Briefly, a word or anything is freely chosen by a spectator and witout asking questions, without anything, the word appears onto the spectators own arm without them even realising! However, Jake, since you are just starting out Mentalism, I do not recommend this DVD just yet. I suggest the other 2, and when you are comfortable with the general feel of mentalism, then dig into specific tricks such as this one.
You can find this on ellusionist here: http://www.ellusionist.com/tagged-by-rich-ferguson.html

So to sum up, if you want to find a DVD that explains mentalism, teaches you to be a mentalist and gives amazing tricks, dig into Rich Fergusons series of This is Mentalism. Once you have become more comfortable with the feel of Mentalism, you can buy Tagged which is smackdown the best trick I have ever owned.

If you have any questions please ask, I will be happy to reply to another fellow EOM community member ;)

P.S This is my first post :D

Cheers

Wow well done Scott! Your contributing so much already! We will be covering a lot of those effects as well! It will be nice to see what you think of our spin on Richards performances. We use his effects all the time but we just change it up slightly to suit us!

Sure, once you teach the moves I'll be sure to give you feedback, cause I have performed most of Rich's moves himself. However, make sure you give full credit to Rich for the effects, because honestly I really love Rich.

I dont think dvds are the best for mentalism as it is a classic art and should not be just looked on as magic books are the best i think especialy corindas 13 steps to mentalism what has also been adapted as a dvd and the best thing to do is look at the products of people likr luke jermay docc hilford derren brown and i cant remember derrens co writers name he is also amazing but 13steps to mentalism is the bible of mentalism so if you havnt got it thats where you should start

Yeah, I've seen the trailer, it looks really amazing. Before I buy this, though, I want to know what is included in the DVD. There's obviously the way to write the word on someone's arm without them knowing, but are other methods included as well: forcing the word they choose or guessing which word they're thinking about, how to make the gimmick (if there is one, that is), ...

Yes making the gimmick is included, so are methods of forcing. That's about all I can say without revealing it.

Thank you, that's all I wanted to hear! I'm gonna see where I can buy it.

By the way, do you know what happened to the EoM shop from before the website updated or are you just in charge of the forums?

According to Vinh, the shop will be reestablished and back online sometime within the near future. Stay tuned.

You know,

Scott has pretty much summed everything up, those three videos will give you a huge variety of ways to force thoughts, words, cards and a huge variety of wicked gimmicks that can be easily made. He gives tips on everything from presentation to different methods.

Great Advice (AGAIN!!!!) Scott!

Hey Scott! Have you ever heard of Derren Brown? He is really good along with Rich Ferguson. I also like BoscoMind. He is on YouTube and he performs this trick where he guesses how much money is in someones wallet!!! Isnt that insane! Well, maybe not to you as you seem to know most of the mentalism tricks but for me I cant wrap my head around it :D

It's quite simple when you know ( money in wallet ) have a look around YouTube and you'll find the answer, I think scam school covered it one week,

Will do soap. Hopefully I can find something. Also another great mentalism DVD is Boondock Mental by Nate Kranzo. It is also found on Ellusionist.com. I really like some of the effects on that DVD, but I also like This Is Mentalism 1/2.

edit: Unfortunately I could not find the video, the closest I could find was The Trick That Fooled Einstein from scamschool. Its kind of similar but different. The trick starts at 2:10 but there are some cool tricks before that and one that is interactive. Here is the BoscoMind video:

It is really cool. I like it and he doesnt even do a math trick or anything like that.
