Hi guys, I have a question, hope you can help me solving this.

There are a lot of tricks where you need a setup at the beginning, or you are left in a very dangerous position after the end of the trick. And generally, you might want to perform several tricks during one performance. So the question is: how do you prepare your setup for several tricks at once, or how do you clean up your routines?

I understand it is a general question and it must be trick-specific. Lets for instance take this video:
http://www.encyclopediaofmagic.com.au/library/band-through-finger
You need to get into a specific position before this trick, and you obviously need some time out of your spectator's view to do that. So, uh, how and when do you do that?

And yeah, to make my point clear: this is not just about one card trick, its rather about magic in general.

i hope im answering your question lol.

generally if there is a heavy amount of setup in a trick, i set up way beforehand and use it as an opener. for tricks where im left extremely dirty, i tend to end with those.

also, maintaining a rapport is essential. you can pass off setting up as just fiddling with your rubber bands, cards, etc.
there have been legitimate times where i am setting up the deck as im talking to the spectator, up to 4 or 5 cards at a time. something i learned was jay sankey was this- pretend youre looking through the deck for certain cards to use, when in in fact, you are really setting up the deck. then, he says- "wait, why am i picking out the cards? YOU should be doing that!" and in that moment he is setup. works like a charm :)

hope this helped!

I see what your point is! Well if you are a "card-tricks" performer it is quite difficult to make the essential preperation for more than one trick! If you want to perform tricks with cards, rubber bands or generally objects you can easily make the preperations you need!

So if I'm getting right what you are saying guys regarding card tricks, its better to use only one card trick that requires a setup and its better to use it in the beginning only, right? Well, that's kinda sad =)

Well if more than one tricks need the same preperation you understand that there aren't many things to do!For example if you need to place the four aces on the top of the deck you can't place another cards because obviously you will need to shuffle! Perform a card trick, then show something else and then while talking with your audience prepare the deck! With showmanship and misdirection everything is possible my friend!Control your audience!

I usually preform card tricks and you just have to find ways to do the setup in plain sight. For instance, EOM did a tutorial on YouTube called Vampirism (or something like that) and I found that if paired with a force before that performance, it creates a pretty cool effect. As for general tricks, I'd recommend rearranging the order of your tricks to work them out similar to what i just attempted to explain or you could simply have different decks of prearranged cards and do a deck switch between tricks with a little misdirection.

If you want to force a specific card impromptu, you can just spread the cards to the spectator "to show that it's a genuine deck, no trickery" and when you've found that card, split the spread at that point by moving your hands away from each other while you're talking, which is a very natural gesture, and say something the likes of "I'm just showing the cards aren't in a specific order, no special set-up or something", and when you bring the two halves together you just put the hand that held the top cards on the bottom (the right hand, I think) and vice versa. You've now successfully cut the card to the top (or bottom if you like bottom card forces better) while assuring the spectator that the deck is in no way tricked or set up.

I think this came from Wayne Houchin's Stigmata, but I'm not sure. Don't know if you understand, but I just wanted to show that you can set up your deck even while performing ;)

If you've got a trick that uses a setup deck, let's say the Si Stebbins Stack Like in this trick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qirF-9civ0 have several decks in your pocket setup in the Si Stebbins Stack. Then show them your setup trick and then a few impromptu ones.

Hope this was helpful, Yehuda

Thanks for sharing that bud it was cool really good example of what can do done with a stacked deck, add some false shuffles and you'll really blow them away

Just one thing about the performer tho he said that he invented that trick and I'm almost sure that missmag did this and credited some one else for it
