Should EOM hold competitions for magicians?

There are loads of people that want to join EOM on their journey to bringing magic to the world, but some of these people don't have the money. I had an idea that maybe EOM could host competitions for free members to win subscriptions to their site.

These competitions could consist of competitors presenting magic tutorials, with the top three tutorials being the winners or whatever, or they could consist of magic performances, or something related to magic (Magic Raffle anyone O.O).

This is just an idea, but I'm just curious as to how many people support this idea.

Tell me watcha think :D

Hey I moved this to Forum Suggestions to make sure that the guys see it

As for my opinion, to be honest the people who are able to WIN competitions are the ones who need EoM the least lol, so it just doesn't make a whole lotta sense to me

I have been thinking about holding internal contests and such, with possibly having prizes of decks and stuff like that, but that's a slightly different idea

Good idea! Maybe the winner could get a premium membership for two months or something! The EOM team have done a competition in the past and the price was some awsome decks and a card clip! :-)

hmmmmm i think i'm goimg with strat on this he made a really good point,
And i really dont think the money issue is any thing to worrie about most kids i know spend the money that this costs a month in a week on sweets and cans of coke
And if these kids want to still learn then they can still get to grips with the foundation magic for free,
This is really a fair deal ;-)

I agree on the kids part but holding a competition wouldn't be bad :P

I don't think I fully explained myself clearly. When I meant competitions, I meant hosting events such as a tutorial party etc. This way, competitors trade their knowledge of magic for a chance to win a subscription to furthering their knowledge. For me, this seems quite fair, for only those who are real dedicated to magic will be rewarded. Furthermore, it's better for those who've already spent millions (not me o.O) on trying to learn magic who have only learnt a limited amount from their tutoring. For them, they can teach us what they've learnt and in return, they get taught by EOM.

Solitaire Guy's quote about saying there should be competitions within seems like a good idea. That could work as well.

However, to Soap's quote about kids spending more money on coke and sweets, I have to disagree. Yes, they possibly do consume more than $10 a week, however, it is not them that spends that money on sweets. It is their parents. Now, you might say that those kids should just beg for their parents to subscribe but most of the time, parents will not allow it for a few reasons:

1. They might find it a waste of money, as they are not really receiving something they can touch (if you know what I mean) in return.
2. Most parents do not like to sign up their credit card onto unknown websites, or just even websites in general. Hackers are always lurking (O.O) (This point is also the reason why teenagers who DO work cannot necessarily sign up, as they don't have credit cards [And people wonder why...{That's a joke btw...}])

But these are just my view points and hey, ain't more view points the better? It's always good to hear another person's story. So...MAGICAL :P

Fair point bud but the sweet thing was really just a joke,

Even tho their parents might not no the site you can pay via paypal witch is very safe.

I reallt feel if they held any sort of comp for free menberships then you would only really get the more advance magicians winning, and also so there might be some kid out there thats really good but hasn't got a cam.

Also this is a sponser/ad free site and i really dont think EOM can afford to give stuff away even just to maintain it must cost loads, and what they have put into it must have left their banks empty, and like i've said b4 they are still giving the foundations away for free so it's not leaving the little ones out.

Just one more thing i dont think ads r a good idea even if it would bring free memberships for all coz wouldn't it put EOM right back where they started from with all the hasse they was gettong?

Reading all your posts, i think maybe just maybe a small once give - away in which anyone who contributes a video of them performing a trick has a chance of winning. The winner is chosen at random so its more fair to everyone. Then the best are chosen by hand and featured :P (though they won't get a prize cause its prob unfair)

Paypal could work, however there are still some people that think paypal is dodgy. As for the whole advance magician thing, that is kind of the point. Don't you think that advanced magicians who've spent all the time and effort into magic should be rewarded at least a bit, I mean, you reap what you sow. Furthermore, if advanced magicians were to win, it'd reduce the probability of a troll gaining a free subscription by about 100% because I'm pretty sure advanced aren't going to troll on a website they could use as a tool to further develop their learning.

If this advanced magicians thing gets too complicated then EOM could split the competitions into groups (Age/Skill/Whatever) And trust me, like almost everyone that has a computer has a camera of some sort (Phone,iPod, COMPUTER CAMERA!@!#$!$!%O.O.....) So it'd be highly unlikely for a child that is really good to miss out. They'd miss out more because if they can't afford a camera, I'm pretty sure their parents would not allow them to join a website that they would most likely think is 'stupid' (This is not me, this is just a general fact. There are lots of people who don't like magic :( and sometimes, they have the power to decide whether their child can join such websites as these and even if their child is REALLY into magic, their parents still won't allow it. I mean, it IS their credit card/paypal account.)

EOM's website has only just started and yes, they are still building up to be something big. This idea is for when EOM become big enough to support themselves and gain a little extra on the side. By then I'm sure they'll be able to spare a months free membership to someone.

And yeah, keep EOM ad free. If Wiki can do it, so can you! (Get it? cos they're both encyclopedias........)

I think that Strat made a good point...

But it could also be argued that the people who win the competitions are actually the ones who have worked the hardest on their act and performance, thus making them more deserving of a place on the site or a reward.
I think the idea of setting them Competitions into AGE groups, SKILL groups and TYPE OF TRICK groups is a very good idea, this way everybody should have a fair chance. However, you may find that the odd heartless person will be a MASTER and enter a beginner competition.

Just some thoughts on it, I personally like the idea but feel that they should be very wary of who the competitions are available to and what the rewards are.
