(also known as 'What's this sleight called?')

Every magician has these moments: you're browsing through magic videos and you see a magician do the most unbelievable trick ever. After watching the video a few times, you're able to pinpoint exactly at what point he does the sleight that defines the whole trick and approximately what the sleight does. You absolutely need to learn the sleight and start browsing hundreds (I might be exaggerating a little bit) of websites but to no avail: if only you knew what the sleight was called!

That is where this thread comes in! Hopefully, the more advanced magicians amongst you will browse this thread and help the less advanced ones by giving them the name (and/or where to learn it, etc) of those particular sleights that cost them hours of endless searching... They will then do some research, learn the sleight and they'll be finally able to practise in peace.

        Hi everyone~

I want to share with you all a story last night, I was out with a few friends at a bar and I happened to have enough courage in me after a few drinks and started to get a little chatty. Still being the nervous little boy I am inside I still didn't really have the courage yet to walk up to this girl who I just thought was beautiful. But I some how mustered up the confidence to pretend she dropped a coin which I dropped... I did a simple retention vanish (which I just learn from the boys a week or so ago) and it blew her away!! I then carried on to do another two simple tricks and I am just buzzing still how magic has given me the opportunity to talk to such a beautiful girl and now I have her contact details D: still feels unreal ahah - sorry if it seems like I am bragging....... It is just amazing how everybody does love magic and that by knowing magic you open doors that may never have been open. I have no idea if this even makes sense but thats my little story! =)

Should EOM hold competitions for magicians?

There are loads of people that want to join EOM on their journey to bringing magic to the world, but some of these people don't have the money. I had an idea that maybe EOM could host competitions for free members to win subscriptions to their site.

These competitions could consist of competitors presenting magic tutorials, with the top three tutorials being the winners or whatever, or they could consist of magic performances, or something related to magic (Magic Raffle anyone O.O).

This is just an idea, but I'm just curious as to how many people support this idea.

Tell me watcha think :D
I've done a quick search on the internet to find some articles wich will help people create their own magic tricks.I haven't found enough and felpful material so here is my own quide on how to create you own tricks! The material ued is from books and some DVD's but mainly are my ideas. The way that these great magicians have become more well known is the fact that they have created their own tricks.

Hopefully this thread will help those members that are thinking of doing this for themselves.

1. Start a list

We have to start somewhere and the best place to start is by making a list of your favourite tricks that you perform. You don't need to worry about going in to too much detail but the list should at least include the titles of the tricks, the techniques that are used to perform the trick as well as if any gimmicked decks or coins are needed for each trick.

2. Check back through the list

The main thing that you're looking for here is the techniques that are being used in each trick. Are the same techniques coming up in many of the tricks? Chances are that the same techniques are being used in quite a few.

3. Put your thinking cap on

The next step is to think about what kind of trick you are wanting to create. It doesn't have to be card or coin tricks, it can be anything you want and using any props you want. Are you wanting the trick to involve normal props or gimmicked props? Again write all of this down as you will be able to keep referring back to it as you go along.

4. Go back in time

OK, not literally but think backwards. By this I mean to think of the end result and then work to how you are going to get there. Trust me, it will make the whole process much simpler.

5. Changing the techniques you know

If you're already doing tricks then you already know about and use techniques in your tricks. Every technique that you can do, try to think up other ways of achieving the same result. Every technique can be changed and even improved so why not be the one to create a new idea and show it off before anyone else.

Trying to create new tricks can be hard for many people so please do not get disheartened because ideas did not come to you immediately. Great things take time. It may be hours, days, weeks or months but believe me it will happen and when it does you'll be glad you stuck with it.

        Hey guys!

This is a really cool little sleight you can do to impress a waitress or do impromptu to establish yourself as a legitimate magician!

In it you display an ID/Credit Card, vanish it completely (showing both hands cleanly empty and without using sleeves), and then make it reappear in an instant.

Here's a performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoSQM2PYPXU
Here's the explanation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPapkacTY30
Hope this is helpful guys!
